Fluoride Program
Importance of Fluoride
Lincoln Trail District Health Department offers the KIDS Smile fluoride varnish program (a safe, concentrated fluoride easily applied to teeth) to children participating in the WIC Program. This varnish application offers extra protection against tooth decay and can even help reverse early decay. Children can receive this service twice a year at our clinics. To schedule an appointment, please call a clinic near you.
* This fluoride application will not interfere with fluoride applied at a dental office during routine cleanings or with insurance coverage through Medicaid dental.
The Benefits of Fluoride
As a safe and cost-effective method for protecting teeth throughout life, fluoride is especially beneficial for children. Fluoride is a natural mineral. Research has found that fluoride at controlled levels can have a significant effect in preventing tooth decay (cavities). It works by strengthening the outer tooth layer, called enamel, making it more difficult for decay bacteria to get in. Today, fluoride can be found in community water systems (tap water), toothpaste, mouth rinses, supplements, and more.
Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in children in the United States and can lead to painful infections, missed school days, poor nutrition, and self-esteem issues. To keep a healthy smile for life, you should brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, visit a dentist regularly, and drink tap water.
